Kyrenia (Girne): Things to Do, North Cyprus (2026)
Kyrenia, known in Turkish as Girne, is the main tourist town on the north coast of North Cyprus. It centres on a horseshoe-shaped harbour and a medieval castle, set against the Beşparmak (Five Finger) mountains. Highlights include Bellapais Abbey, St Hilarion Castle and nearby turtle beaches, with a walkable old town full of restaurants and cafés.
Kyrenia is the busiest and best known base for a holiday in North Cyprus, and for most visitors it is the natural place to start. The Turkish name is Girne, and you will see both used across signs, maps and listings, so it helps to know they refer to the same place. The town sits on a narrow coastal strip between the Mediterranean and the Beşparmak mountains, which means you are rarely far from either the sea or the hills.
The heart of Kyrenia is its old harbour, a curved stone quay lined with restaurants, cafés and small boats, guarded at one end by Kyrenia Castle. Behind the waterfront, pedestrianised lanes hold shops, bars and places to eat, and the whole centre is easy to explore on foot. Away from the town, the surrounding area rewards a car: mountain villages such as Bellapais and Karmi, castles perched along the ridge, and a run of beaches and coves stretching east and west.
Kyrenia suits a wide range of travellers. Couples and independent visitors tend to favour the harbour and old town, families lean towards the beach resorts and calmer coves along the coast, and anyone interested in history has castles, an abbey and a shipwreck museum within easy reach. It works equally well as a relaxed seaside break or as a touring base for the wider region.
Things to do
Kyrenia packs a lot of sights into a small area. Kyrenia Castle sits at the harbour entrance and houses the Shipwreck Museum, home to the remains of an ancient Greek merchant vessel, one of the oldest trading ships ever recovered. In the mountains above town, St Hilarion Castle offers wide views over the coast, while Buffavento, the highest of the area's mountain castles, appeals to hikers. A short drive uphill brings you to Bellapais and its 13th-century Gothic abbey. The Kyrenia Mountains Trail runs along the range for walkers wanting more. The listings below cover these and the rest of what the area offers.

Where to stay
Kyrenia has the widest choice of accommodation in North Cyprus, from small harbour boutique hotels in the old town to large beachfront resorts with pools, spas and casinos strung along the coast east and west of the centre. Staying in the town itself puts restaurants and the harbour on your doorstep, while the resorts suit those after a self-contained beach base. Prices run from budget to premium, and peak in high summer.

Where to eat
Dining in Kyrenia ranges from harbour-front fish restaurants and traditional Cypriot meze tavernas to international kitchens and casual cafés. The old harbour is the obvious setting for a long lunch or dinner by the water, while the villages above town, Bellapais among them, offer quieter terraces with mountain and sea views. Expect everything from a simple café breakfast to a full meze spread across the price bands below.

Beaches
The coast around Kyrenia mixes sandy resort beaches, small coves and protected nature sites. To the east, Alagadi is a protected nesting beach for sea turtles, which come ashore in the warmer months. Both east and west of town you will find beach clubs with sunbeds and cafés, alongside quieter free stretches of sand and shingle. Many are a short drive from the centre, so a hire car makes the string of coves along the coast easy to reach.

Getting there
Most visitors arrive at Ercan Airport, roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Kyrenia by road. A hire car is the most practical way to explore, since the castles, villages and beaches are spread along the coast and up into the mountains, and several are hard to reach otherwise. Taxis are available for the airport run and around town, and the harbour and old town are comfortably walkable once you are based in the centre. Some visitors also arrive via the south of the island and drive across.

Best time to visit
Spring, from April to June, and autumn, in September and October, are the most comfortable times to visit, with warm days and pleasant sea temperatures. High summer is hot and the busiest and priciest period, with the sea staying warm well into autumn. Winters are mild and much quieter, better suited to sightseeing, walking and castle visits than to beach days. If turtles are a priority, the warmer months are when they nest along the nearby coast.
